Effects from Skin Contact Will cause skin irritation (after prolonged or repeated contact). Signs/symptoms can include redness, swelling, itching and dryness. May be absorbed through the skin and produce effects similiar to those caused by inhalation and/or ingestion. Effects from Inhalation Central Nervous System Depression: signs/symptoms can include headache, dizziness, drowsiness, lack of coordination, slowed reaction time, slurred speech, giddiness and unconsciousness. Upper Respiratory Tract Irritation: Signs/symptoms may include cough, sneezing, nasal discharge, headache, hoarseness, and nose and throat pain. Peripheral Neuropathy: signs/symptoms can include tingling of extremities, incoordination, numbness, weakness and tremors. Effects from Ingestion Ingestion is unlikely to be a route of exposure. Irritation to the gastrointestinal tract. Signs/symptoms can include pain, vomiting, abdominal tenderness, nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting. Central Nervous System Depression: signs/symptoms can include headache, dizziness, drowsiness, muscular weakness, lack of coordination, slowed reaction time, fatigue, blurred vision, slurred speech, giddiness, tremors and convulsions. Aspiration Pneumonitis: signs/symptoms can include coughing, difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing up blood and pneumonia, which can be fatal. Other Toxicological Information The potential neurologic effects from overexposure to Hexane can be increased by concurrent exposure to Methyl Ethyl Ketone. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5 FIRST AID ------------------------------------------------------------------------ EYE CONTACT In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water. Get immediate medical attention. 3M 'STAMARK' E-44 CONTACT CEMENT Page 4 of 9. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ SKIN CONTACT Flush skin with large amounts of water. If irritation persists, contact a doctor. INHALATION Remove person to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, get immediate medical attention. SWALLOWED If swallowed, call a doctor or Poisons Information Centre immediately. Only induce vomiting at the instruction of a doctor. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6 FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES ------------------------------------------------------------------------ SUITABLE EXTINGUISHING MEDIA Water spray. Carbon dioxide. Dry chemical. Alcohol-type foam. FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES Wear full protective clothing, including helmet, self-contained, positive pressure or positive pressure demand self-contained breathing apparatus, tunic and pants, bands around arms, waist and legs, full facepiece, and protective covering for exposed areas of the head. Water may not effectively extinguish fire; however, it should be used to keep fire-exposed containers and surfaces cool and prevent explosive rupture. For leaks or spills which have not ignited, water spray can be used to disperse the flammable vapour and protect personnel attempting to stop the leak. UNUSUAL FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS Closed containers exposed to heat from fire may build pressure and explode. Vapours may travel long distances along the ground or floor to an ignition source and flash back. EXPLOSION AVOIDANCE Keep away from heat, sparks, open flame, and other sources of ignition. Prevent all sources of ignition. Vapours may ignite explosively. Explosive when mixed with oxidising substances. Fire Avoidance Extremely flammable liquid and vapour. Ground containers securely when transferring contents. Wear low static or properly grounded 3M 'STAMARK' E-44 CONTACT CEMENT Page 5 of 9. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ shoes. No smoking while handling this material. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7 ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES (SPILL) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Personal Precautions Refer to other sections of this MSDS for information regarding physical and health hazards, respiratory protection, ventilation, and personal protective equipment. Spill Response Ventilate area with fresh air. Extinguish all ignition sources. Contain spill. Working from around the edges of the spill inward, cover with commercially available inorganic absorbent material until it appears dry. Collect as much of the spilled material as possible using non-sparking tools. Clean up residue. Place in a suitable metal container. Seal the container. For information on the 3M range of Sorbent materials, call 3M OH&ES on Freecall 1800 024-464. Methods for Disposal Incinerate in a permitted hazardous waste incinerator. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8 HANDLING AND STORAGE ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Storage Requirements Store in a cool place, out of direct sunlight. Store at temperatures below 50 degrees C. Keep container dry. Incompatibility - Materials to Avoid Store away from acids. Store away from heat. Store out of direct sunlight. Recommended Ventilation Keep container in well-ventilated area. Fire Avoidance Extremely flammable liquid and vapour. Ground containers securely when transferring contents. Wear low static or properly grounded shoes. No smoking while handling this material. Use Instructions Contents may be under pressure, open carefully. Keep container tightly closed when not in use. 3M 'STAMARK' E-44 CONTACT CEMENT Page 6 of 9. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9 EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PROTECTION ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Eye Protection Avoid eye contact. During operations in which eye exposure is likely, the following should be worn alone, or in combination, as appropriate: Unvented goggles. Full-face shield. Eye protection should comply with AS/NZS1337. Hand Protection During operations in which hand exposure is likely, wear appropriate gloves. Gloves made from one of the following material(s) are recommended: Butyl rubber. Skin Protection Avoid skin contact. Use one or more of the following personal protection items as necessary to prevent skin contact: Apron. Protective garments (other than gloves) should be made of the following material(s): butyl rubber Respiratory Protection Avoid breathing vapours, mists or spray. During operations in which inhalation exposure is likely, respiratory protection should be used. Select and use respirators in accordance with AS/NZS1715. When required, use one of the following: Half-facepiece organic vapour respirator. For information about respirators, call 3M on 1800 024464. Prevention of Accidental Ingestion Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product. Wash exposed areas thoroughly with soap and water. Recommended Ventilation Provide sufficient ventilation to maintain emissions well below exposure standards. Use with adequate dilution ventilation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10 EXPOSURE STANDARDS ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ACETONE (67-64-1) NOHSC EXPOSURE STANDARDS: TWA 500ppm 1185mg/m3 STEL 1000ppm 2375mg/m3 3M 'STAMARK' E-44 CONTACT CEMENT Page 7 of 9. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ METHYL ETHYL KETONE (78-93-3) NOHSC EXPOSURE STANDARDS: TWA 150ppm 445mg/m3 STEL 300ppm 890mg/m3 HEXANE (110-54-3) NOHSC EXPOSURE STANDARDS: TWA 20ppm 72mg/m3 N-AMYL ACETATE (628-63-7) NOHSC EXPOSURE STANDARDS: TWA 50ppm 270mg/m3 STEL 100ppm 541mg/m3 MAGNESIUM OXIDE (1309-48-4) NOHSC EXPOSURE STANDARDS: TWA 10mg/m3 (AS FUME) TOLUENE (108-88-3) NOHSC EXPOSURE STANDARDS: TWA 50ppm STEL 150ppm Overall exposure for this substance will be influenced by skin exposure, including mucous membranes and eyes, either by airborne or more particularly by direct contact with the substance.
