Frequently Asked Questions

What is a defibrillator used for?

A defibrillator is a device that uses electric shocks or pulses to restore a heartbeat back to normal. They are often used on patients suffering sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). It is important to note that an AED (an Automated External Defibrillator) will only deliver a shock to a patient with a shockable rhythm.

Where should I store my defibrillator?

Store the SAM 500P in an unobstructed, secure location and in a clean, dry environment where it will be clearly seen and heard. It is recommended that this AED is stored in the soft carry case supplied. Storage outside the temperature range of 0°C to 50°C may decrease the shelf-life of the HeartSine Pad-Pak. (HeartSine User Manual, Page 8 & 15)

How does a semi-automatic defibrillator work?

The SAM 500P is a semi-automatic defibrillator. This means it comes with two buttons: an ON/OFF button to start the defibrillator, and a button that delivers a therapeutic shot to the patient. During CPR the SAM 500P will play an audible beep and flash (the “Safe To Touch” indicator) as a guide to the user on how frequently to compress a patient’s chest if CPR is required. (HeartSine 500P User Manual, Page 14-16) The SAM 500P also features real-time CPR coaching that advises the user on the correct rhythm and rate of compression thanks to its innovative detection system.

What is the difference between an automatic and semi-automatic defibrillator?

An automatic defibrillator is a completely automated device. Once the user has applied the electrode pads to the patient, the defibrillator is able to apply the shocks to the patient by itself. A semi-automatic defibrillator relies on the user to have more control during an emergency situation. The SAM 500P is a semi-automatic device that uses clever visual and verbal cues to help guide the user during an emergency situation. Seton has a great range of automatic defibrillators that can be found here

How to place a defibrillator on a patient?

The Samaritan® 500P Semi-Automatic Defibrillator includes visual instructions on the front of the defibrillator to show where the electrode pads must be placed. You must strictly observe the instructions shown in the Emergency User Guide and on the device.

Is this defibrillator portable?

The SAM 500P is lightweight (only weighing 1.1kg) and comes with a portable carry case. It also has an IP56 rating, which is the highest in the industry for protection against dust and water ingress.

Is this child friendly?

For use on smaller children (from 1 to 8 years old), remove the adult Pad-Pak and install a Paediatric-Pak. The Paediatric-Pak is sold separately. For more information please see page 20-21 of the SAM 500P User Manual

Does a defibrillator need a maintenance check each time it’s used in an emergency?

After use, the defibrillator should be checked for dirt or contamination and cleaned if necessary. The electrode pads are a single-use item and must be replaced after each use. Dispose of the electrodes separately as infectious waste material.

HeartSine recommends users perform regular weekly and monthly maintenance checks when the defibrillator is not in use. (For more information HeartSine 360P User Manual, Page 27)

How to Use

Dial Triple Zero (000) immediately and ask for an ambulance if you suspect someone is experiencing a sudden cardiac arrest. Only use AEDs in accordance with manufacturer's instruction manuals. Download the instruction manual here

A Semi-Automatic External Defibrillator relies on the user to deliver the shock to the patient. It is important that the person using an AED on a patient follows any verbal or visual prompts displayed on the AED until medical treatment arrives. Additional emergency treatment such as CPR and rescue breaths may be required until medical treatment arrives.

The HeartSine® Samaritan® Pad 500P is a semi-automatic external defibrillator designed to help users quickly deliver a defibrillation shock to victims of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). During CPR, the SAM 500P will provide visual and audible feedback to help guide the user on CPR force and rhythm (if CPR is required). How to respond to cardiac arrest

Source: Heart Foundation Organisation

According to the Heart Foundation, a cardiac arrest is a medical emergency. If a person has a cardiac arrest, they will not be conscious or breathing normally. They need your immediate help, and the best way to do this to call Triple Zero (000), starting chest compressions and using a defibrillator (AED). Every minute counts when a person is in cardiac arrest. You don’t have to be a trained paramedic to help save a life. Any bystander (even with no training) can improve the likelihood of a cardiac arrest patient surviving by taking three key steps.

1. Call Triple Zero (000)

Request an ambulance.

2. Push

Compressions-Only CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). Push hard and fast in the centre of the chest.

3. Shock

Use an AED. Provide rapid defibrillation. Anyone can use a defibrillator, as the device gives voice instructions to tell you what to do. The rescuer should continue CPR until the ambulance arrives. Remember the Triple Zero (000) operator will guide you through what to do.
