Frequently Asked Questions

What is a water-filled barrier?

A water-filled barrier is defined by the Department of Roads & Maritime Services as a barrier installed during short term and ongoing road works or emergency situations. It is often filled with water or sand to provide enough strength to withstand the impact of a traffic incident.

Are water-filled barriers a safe option?

Water-filled barriers are used to delineate pedestrians from vehicles or hazards. This can separate pedestrians and workers near busy roads and intersections.

What are water-filled barriers used for?

Water-filled barriers are used in a variety of different applications. These include crowd control, roadblocks, traffic diversions, work zones, warehousing and distribution centres. These barriers are best suited for separating pedestrians and vehicles in low speed areas

Can I use this barrier as a permanent structure?

According to the Department of Roads & Maritime services, water-filled barriers must be removed once road work has been completed. This barrier is not a permanent structure and does not adhere to the relevant AS/NZ compliance codes for this purpose.

What do I need to consider when purchasing a water filled barrier?

When purchasing a water-filled barrier, it is important to consider what speed zones the barrier will be in. If it is being used in a reduced speed area (below 20km/h), we recommend looking through our range of stackable water-filled barriers. In areas that are high traffic but low speed, you can’t go past our interlocking water-filled barriers for safety and security. For school zones or car parks with a speed limit of 40km/h, our heavy duty water-filled barriers are a cost effective and safety compliant option.

In high speed areas, we recommend using a crash or MASH tested barrier to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists.

What is a ‘MASH’ rating?

MASH stands for Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware, and is used to rate the performance of road-side barriers during traffic accidents. There are two levels: TL-1 and TL-2, and refer to a barrier's ability to absorb the impact of a crash involving a 1,100kg object at 50km/h (TL-1) and 70km/h (TL-2).

How deep do sign posts need to be?

The depth of the footings for your sign post will depend on the size of the sign itself and the conditions of the ground it is being installed in. We recommend using the NSW Road and Transport authority’s installation guide as a tool to help you make the right decision when installing your sign.

Is this barrier crash tested?

This barrier is not crash tested. We recommend using it to delineate and direct pedestrians in low speed areas, on construction sites and during special events (to control crowds). It is not MASH or crash rated and should not be used in high speed areas.

How do I unload these barriers?

When handling heavy or bulky equipment, it is important that you take the necessary safety precautions to prevent injuries at work. We recommend looking through our technical data sheets to assess the weight of the barriers, so the right equipment can be used. Our range of interlocking and heavy duty water-filled barriers both have holes for forklifts and hoists. Following safe work practices when lifting and moving water-filled barriers is best practice when handling heavy objects.

Which works better: Sand-filled or water-filled barriers?

Both sand-filled and water-filled barriers provide weight and ballast to prevent them from moving. Sand requires more clean up when drained compared to water. The individual demands of your project means that you may have to do further research to make sure you purchase the right barrier for you.

Should I buy or hire water-filled barriers?

Water-filled barriers are made from strength-tested and durable plastics. Because of this, they are a great long-term or short-term option. If your project is expected to last longer than a week, we recommend investing in our extensive value range of water-filled barriers

When is it best to use water-filled barriers?

We recommend using water-filled barriers on work sites, near major highways and busy intersections, and where pedestrians and workers may need protection from vehicles and other road hazards.

Can safety barriers be installed on a curb?

According to the roads, waterways and transport website, it is not recommended to install safety barriers on a curb. This is because impact with a curb could cause the car to roll and pitch, which could affect the impact of the car with the barrier. If you do need to install it on top of a kerb, it should be at least 1.5m away from the kerb to allow the vehicle to stabilise after crossing the kerb.

Can safety barriers be installed on a median strip?

Wherever a safety barrier is installed, the potential for the system to slip into incoming traffic must be considered. The width of the median strip should allow full impact without crossing into adjacent travel lanes. Again, it is recommended that a proper assessment is conducted to make sure proper safety procedures are in place.
