Frequently Asked Questions
What is a spill kit?
A spill kit is a purpose-built unit used to clean up spills. Spill kits usually include safety gloves, protective clothing and absorbent material.
Do I need to provide a spill kit?
According to the Work Health Regulations 2011, those running a business must ensure that a spill containment system is available to use where there is the risk of a spill.
Spill containment systems, such as spill kits, are required in each area of the workplace where hazardous chemicals are used, handled or stored. It is critical that the containment system maintain separation between incompatible chemicals.
How do I know which spill kit I should purchase?
To determine which spill kit best suits your workplace, you will need to consider the types of fluids that exist in your workplace. For general purpose fluids that are either water or oil based, we recommend a General Purpose (also known as General Maintenance) Spill Kit. General purpose fluids include coolants, solvents, gasoline, kerosene, vegetable oil, paint, etc. General absorbents are commonly used around machinery, under leaky pipes and messy traffic areas.
For oil and petroleum-based spills such as non-water soluble chemicals and paints, we recommend Oil Only Absorbents. These adsorbents will not absorb water and will float indefinitely. They are commonly used to clean up oils such as hydraulic oil, moto oil, motor fluid, cooking oil, turpentine and lubricants.
SPC recommends Chemical Absorbents for hazardous chemical fluids such as acids, bases, sodium hydroxide and aggressive chemicals. The Chemical Absorbents are polypropylene absorbents that are surfactant-treated and can be used on a wide range of chemicals, including hydrofluoric acid. These absorbents are chemically inert and will not react with aggressive fluids. Please note that the Chemical Absorbents take on the properties of whatever they absorb.
To find out which spill kit type is suitable for your requirements, please view our Absorbent Guide
Can this product store leaks from hazardous chemicals?
This product is built to contain spills or leaks from drums. It is not a long term storage option for hazardous chemicals or liquids. If you do notice that your bund pallet is full, we recommend using an absorbent spill kit and disposing of the hazardous materials as soon as possible to prevent any injuries to employees or staff.
Where should a spill kit be stored?
Spill kits should be stored in designated areas that are easily accessible by all staff. It is recommended a spill kit is stored in each area of the workplace where a hazardous chemical is used, handled or stored.
How do I use a spill kit?
To correctly use this spill kit, please follow the instructions included.
Do employees need to be trained on how to use a spill kit?
We recommend that all employees are trained on how to use a spill kit so that they understand the severity of a spill, and how to react quickly. A lack of spill kit training can result in the misuse of spill kit equipment.
After using the spill kit, how do I dispose of the spilt material?
The materials used to clean up the spill must be disposed of correctly. Due to possible hazardous and toxic fluids absorbed, we do not recommend disposal procedures. Instead, you should contact your local authorities.
