Frequently Asked Questions

What is a spill containment pallet?

A spill containment pallet is a pallet with internal storage designed to capture spills and leaks from liquid containers.

Do I need a spill containment pallet?

According to EPA Victoria’s Liquid Storage and Handling Guidelines , the activities that are at risk of leading to spills and leaks from containers are during delivery, dispatch, decanting, and transferring  of liquid substances. Having a spill containment pallet can be used to capture such spills and leaks as well as reduce the likelihood of groundwater and site soil contamination as well as subsequent environmental rehabilitation and remediation costs.

Based on EPA Victoria, it is good practice to have liquid containers stored outside require a secondary containment such as a spill containment pallet.

Where should a spill containment pallet be used?

To determine where a spill containment pallet is required for use, the Authorised Office of the EPA or Council should be spoken to. For spill containment pallets used outside without roofing, measures must be in place to test and appropriately dispose of contaminated water when it rains (Source: Liquid Storage and Handling Guidelines, Environmental Protection Authority Victoria 2018).

Additionally, when using a spill containment pallet, the pallet should be stored on a level surface to ensure that the entire spill capacity remains available, and they should be covered to prevent pallets filling with rainwater, especially if placed outside (Source: Bunding and Spill Management Guidelines, Environmental Protection Authority Tasmania 2015).

What size spill containment pallet should I purchase?

The size of spill containment pallet required will depend on the quantity and volume of the liquid containers requiring the spill containment pallet.

For liquids stored in drums, EPA South Australia states that each spill containment pallet should be able to capture the contents of at least one of the drums stored on the pallet.

For other liquid containers such as an intermediate bulk container (IBC), the spill containment pallet will need to be able to capture at least 110% of the volume of the largest liquid container (Source: Bunding and Spill Management Guidelines, Environmental Protection Authority Tasmania 2015).

Is there any general maintenance required for a spill containment pallet?

Based on EPA Victoria, containers such as spill containment pallets should be inspected by someone with adequate training for spills, leaks and rainwater within the pallets. Depending on the liquid your facility stores, additional inspections and maintenance may be required.  Thus, it is recommended to contact the appropriate authorities in your area to determine all the necessary inspections and maintenance for any spill containments you may have.
