Electrolytes are chemicals, the most common ones are magnesium, sodium, calcium and potassium. The chemicals come with either a positive or negative charge which triggers a reaction in the body.

Why does the body need electrolytes?

Based on Pryme’s guide to heat stress management, the body needs electrolytes for survival and for all the processes in the body to run smoothly. This is because the human body runs on small currents of electricity. When electrolytes are dissolved in water, they conduct electricity. The electrolytes the body consumes interact with other electrolytes and cells in your body. This keeps the body’s electric current flowing.

What are the symptoms of electrolytes deficiency?

Electrolytes are lost through sweat. The more the body sweats, the more electrolytes and water the body loses. When the body lacks electrolytes, you may experience a sense of confusion, headache, muscle cramps or weakness, loss of energy, drowsiness and fatigue.

Why drink electrolyte drinks over plain water?

Plain water does not contain the needed electrolytes that are lost when the body sweats. The more the body sweats and the higher the temperature is, the more electrolytes are lost.

Staying hydrated is as important as replenishing the electrolytes in our body, especially during the summer heat.

What is dehydration?

Pryme’s guide to heat stress management states that a loss of 1% or more of body mass due to fluid loss can be defined as dehydration. Dehydration occurs when the body is losing more fluid than what is being consumed. This causes the body to not perform at its optimum level.

How do I know if my body is dehydrated?

Thirst is an early indication that the body is dehydrated. Unfortunately, thirst is not a reliable indicator as the average person is usually already mildly dehydrated by the time they notice thirst. According to healthdirect, the signs and symptoms of mild to moderate dehydration are:

  • Be thirsty
  • Have a dry mouth, tongue and lips
  • Have dark urine, and not so much of it
  • Have a headache
  • Experience dizziness or feel light-headed, particularly when standing up

What is dehydration?

According to Pryme’s guide to heat stress management, dehydrated workers can experience a decrease in performance of up to 50% if they lose 2% or more of body mass due to fluid loss. Workers not performing at their optimum level can create dangerous working environments.

A lack of fluid intake while active and perspiring heavily can result in heat injury or illness. These include mild heat cramps to heat exhaustion and life-threatening heatstroke.

Workers can experience kidney and urinary complications if they suffer from repeated or prolonged periods of dehydration. Common kidney and urinary problems from dehydration include kidney stones, kidney failure and urinary tract infections.

Severe dehydration, where the body loses 20% or more of fluid, can lead to life-threatening hypovolemic shock. Also known as low blood volume shock, hypovolemic shock prevents the heart from pumping enough blood to keep the body operating. It can result in organ failure and requires immediate emergancy medical attention.

Electrolytes such as sodium and potassium help transmit electrical signals between cells. If they’re unbalanced due to dehydration, these electrical signals can become mixed up and lead to seizures and, occasionally, loss of consciousness.

How much water do you need?

Every day the body loses water from breathing, perspiring, urinating and bowel movement. For your body to function properly, the body’s water supply must be replenished by consuming beverages and foods that contain water.

The amount of water that should be consumed varies from person to person. Factors that affect a person’s daily fluid intake includes what they eat, the temperature, how their metabolism works, their age and whether they have a medical condition. According to healthdirect, men need about 10 cups of water every day and women need about 8 cups (9 cups if they are pregnant or breastfeeding). 1 cup is equivalent to 250ml.

How much water do you need?

Mild dehydration can be simply treated by drinking more water. During times when the body is experiencing significant fluid loss such as from working in environments exposed to high temperatures or sweating profusely, lost electrolytes need to be restored. Sqwincher offers a range of electrolyte products to help you stay hydrated and restore valuable electrolytes. To see the complete range of Sqwincher electrolyte replenisher products, click here.
